"If you want to understand a possible origin of this expression, then I suggest that you spend some time attempting to follow and observe foxes.
"I observed, or attempted to observe, this red fox for several hours one evening in Grand Teton National Park. I watched it successfully hunt and consume a few voles, and it scurried down a gully towards the water. I eagerly hoped for a waterside stroll, so I moved to a vantage point that would provide a fantastic view.
"Unfortunately, the fox never appeared. I waited… and waited… and nothing. Not until I looked behind me and there it was—hunting ten yards behind me!
"The fox absolutely outsmarted me with misdirection. The truth is that I’ve seen similar situations play out multiple times. Foxes seem to know that humans enjoy observing them, so they use misdirection to make us go away from the areas they want to hunt in.
"Even though my ego was slightly bruised, I didn’t remain upset for long as I was able to make this fantastic capture of the fox just before it caught its next meal."
