My most memorable elk encounter...
“I spent three consecutive days tracking and observing this bull elk and his harem during the autumn rut in Yellowstone. While I never really gave him any reason to fear me, he acted quite comfortably around me.
“His comfort level reached new heights as he approached me along the Madison River one morning before sunrise. While it is unethical (and against park regulations) to approach wildlife, what is one to do when the wildlife approaches you?
“I’ve spent significant amounts of time in Creation and around wildlife, and I feel confident in my ability to accurately read a situation and understand the wildlife around me. I felt no threat or anxiety from this elk, so I simply remained calm and still. I feared that if I abruptly left the area, he could become agitated.
“He appreciated my decision, as he only briefly glanced towards me as he passed me by, rewarding my calmness with a once-in-a-lifetime pose and silhouette.”
